Samuel Bourne album of 100 images of India (taken 1863–66). The album measures 34.5 x 46cm The albumen paper prints (21.5 x 28.5cm) are mounted on heavy card leaves (33.5 x 44.5cm). Bound in contemporary green half morocco and pebbled cloth over heavy boards, gilt rules, all edges gilt. The binding is quite rubbed and there is damage from damp at the head of both boards, showing on the inside as well as the outside, but not beyond. The first two leaves and the prints have been silverfished; the damage to the plates is at the corners or edges. There is an occasional spot of foxing on the leaves, but all other plates are clean and in very good condition. ***Includes views of – apparently from all three of Bourne’s major tours – Calcutta, Kalighat, Barrackpore, Benares, Cawnpore, Lucknow, Agra, Fettipore, Gwalior, Delhi, Amritsar, Lahore, Bombay, Simla, Darjeeling, Rangoon and Pagan. Most (78) have ‘Bourne’ and a catalogue number written near the foot of the image, and all but two have a pencilled title and the catalogue number written in pencil below the plate. The lowest number is 407, the highest 2340; most are between 1018 and 1872. Two images are given as ‘Bourne & Shepherd’, and one as ‘Shepherd’.
